Great Divide Brewing Company is one of my favorite Colorado based breweries. Their beers are always fantastic and span out through many beer styles, plus Great Divide does a great job experimenting with new styles and flavors. One of their well know big beers is Yeti, an imperial stout. Belgian Style Yeti is a version of Yeti but fermented with Great Divide’s signature Belgian yeast. Belgian Style Yeti is a summer seasonal beer, and proves that an imperial stout can beer a summer beer too. This big beer has a 9.5% alcohol by volume and “is a one-of-a-kind beer as mysterious as the mythical creature himself.”
Easily the darkest beer I’ve had all summer this beer pours the color of a moonless summer night and pours thick with a creamy, mocha-colored head. Belgian Style Yeti smells like a big stout with lots of chocolate and roasted malt. The Belgian yeast brings a sweet banana ester, vanilla notes, slight spices like coriander, and what almost smells like a smell of wood.
It tastes so good as it hits the lips. Belgian Style Yeti is a beautifully blended mix of stout and Belgian flavors. It’s a big roasted, chocolate, and woodish stout with an nice following of bread, banana, and other sweetnesses. The mouthfeel is heavy for a summer beer but light compared to other imperial stouts. A medium carbonation brings out the flavors but overall this beer retains a nice smooth taste with a thick and sticky feeling coating the mouth. For a big beer the alcohol burn is very slight and mostly masked by roasted lingering malts and a slight bitterness.
Overall this is a very good beer, in my opinion it’s not as good as the original Yeti but Belgian Style Yeti’s lighter flavors are more suitable for the summer months. I would love to see how this beer would age for six months or even a few years. If you like big, dark, beers, give this one a try. It may, or not be, your favorite beer but I guarantee you it won’t be the worst beer you try this year.
Freaks United Beer Rating: 3.8
1: Busch (Anheuser) 2: “I’ll drink it if you buy it for me.” 3: “I’ll buy it.” 4: “I’d recommend this beer if you see it” 5: “I recommend finding, buying, and drinking this beer at all costs necessary, NOW!”
I finally tried the Oak Aged Yeti the other day and I am convinced that my favorite of the group is the original Yeti. Every rendition is interesting, but seems to take away from the beer instead of actually adding to it.
